TO EVERYONE:
Medicine's role in the community has expanded since the 1960s because of increasing commercial, legal, and political
regulations. The physician has evolved from ministering medical care and personal advice to become an influential
force in the paradigm of these powers. While some of our colleagues may not have the time or inclination to assume
that task, others have accepted the responsibility of engaging these groups in this process. In either case, we
must sit at the table to weigh in, as third parties establish the economic and legislative policies that determine
who receives access to medical care, the extent to which it is apportioned, and the freedom or constraints upon
those of us that deliver it. Little, if anything, can be accomplished on an individual level. We look to organizations
to achieve that purpose. National and state societies usually have the greatest resources at their respective level
of influence, but local and regional associations, such as our county medical societies, are the means to represent
the views common to their province. For the geographical area just north of Quakertown and bounded on the other
three sides by County Line Road and the Delaware River, the Bucks County Medical Society is the conduit by which
its physicians have spoken on behalf of our patients and our profession. Our legislators have sought counsel from
representatives of this stalwart Society that has actively weathered more than one hundred fifty years.
Today, our responsibilities in that undertaking are greater than ever. To go forward with a unified message, we
are the stage on which the medical community must discuss its like and opposing views. Our members are encouraged
to seek that forum. Those physicians that are not members are encouraged to join us in this mission.
