Pennsylvania Medical Society speaks out against illegal use of OxyContin
Statement attributable to Carol E. Rose, MD, President, Pennsylvania Medical Society
Throughout Pennsylvania, we've heard reports about the increasing illegal use of OxyContin, a prescription painkiller.
According to a recent press release from Pennsylvania Attorney General Mike Fisher, his office has conducted nearly
100 OxyContin abuse investigations during the last two years. Certainly, this is a sign that widespread abuse and
illegal
distribution is occurring.
OxyContin, when used legally under the supervision of a licensed physician, can ease severe pain, especially for
those individuals requiring end-of-life care. OxyContin is a strong narcotic that's intended to help patients through
extreme pain.
Unfortunately, in certain non-medical situations, OxyContin is not being used for its intended purpose. Instead,
it is being sold illegally through the black market and abused by drug addicts seeking to get a high. Sometimes,
this abuse leads to death.
The Pennsylvania Medical Society supports efforts of law enforcement agencies to stop this abuse. Doctors across
the state believe that abuse of any drug has a negative impact on our society.
Furthermore, the Pennsylvania Medical Society believes that OxyContin, when used legally and under the supervision
of a licensed doctor, can relieve suffering for those patients with unbearable pain. When patients have been given
an appropriate prescription for OxyContin, they should take the medication according to the instructions given
by their doctor and not be fearful of addiction when taking it appropriately. In addition, when the prescription
is no longer needed, the patient should flush the remaining pills down the toilet and not share them with other
individuals.
Finally, doctors encourage individuals who are abusing OxyContin as well as any other drug to seek medical help
to overcome their addition.
The increasing illegal use of OxyContin is alarming, and worries the Pennsylvania Medical Society. All efforts
should be taken to end the abuse and to preserve its intended usage of helping patients suffering from unbearable
pain.
